Globally
1.5 million preventable deaths are related to lack of adequate surgical care
We need your help to change that*
Ando
A sustainable aid model that aims to promote improved global surgical care through the use of community lead clinicians and an African Education Network
The communities we service
Our Lamu Hospital is a Surgical Centre that offers specialised care in plastic-reconstructive surgery for patients with burns, congenital anomalies, fistulas in women and hernias – as well as serving as a training facility for surgeons and nursing staff form Uganda and neighbouring countries. The clinic allows for sustainable long-term and high-quality surgical care for people from all over East Africa.

Veronica
A young woman who was burnt when she was 8 months old after falling into a fire. She has multiple burn contractures to her face and head, as well as fused fingers to her wrists. Veronica has waited 20 years to see a Specialist Plastic Surgeon to release burn contractures around her face and eyes.
Every year an estimated 14 000 people in Uganda undergo amputation. Omeka lost both his legs at age 12 and following the treatment by our surgeons, he is able to have prosthetics fitted and walk again for the first time.
Omeke has never had the chance for a proper prothesis, as he does not have a proper amputation stump. Our partnership with PRO Uganda e.V.allows us to send the patients with the proper amputation stumps over to PRO Uganda e.V. soon after our treatment. This will allow Omeke (and all the amputee patients we work with) to have a custom made prothesis within 2-3 months, and be able to walk for the first time!
Omeka
In Uganda 3 out of 4 people are aware acid and burn violence and 1 in 5 know of an acid burn and violence victim. Acid attacks are a crime that is pervasive in Uganda, and is currently on the rise. Jennifer is a 30 year old patient who had severe acid burns from an acid attack about 1.5 years ago. Our team performed multiple surgeries to remove scar tissue and complete a reconstructive with flap surgery to alleviate the pain and restore her integrity in social life.

What is Modular Aid?
The architectural concept translates the ANDO modularity into architectural space and makes it technically feasible. The basic module with 6.36 x 6.36 meters can accomodate different functions operating theatre, treatment rooms, administration spaces or staff rooms. Build of solid masonry and a concrete ceiling, this basic module is equipped with a wide cantilevered roof which creates all-round covered surfaces that can accommodate secondary functions such as waiting areas storage rooms, kitchens or sanitary facilities. *

What we do
Education and Training
We are focussed on promoting up to date and first class surgical techniques, and instilling these in the reconstructive surgeons who work in Uganda to create an education network with the surrounding countries.
Infrastructure
We establish modular clinics that are purposely designed to be sustainable and multi-functional. Our clinics are able to cover the all needs of our patients and be used as a patient ward, admin building and even an operations theatre.
Surgical Camps
Our team travels to Uganda to assess multiple patients and surgeries. By working collaboratively with the doctors who are currently on the ground, we are able to enable an information exchange of different surgical techniques and build local capacity in Uganda.

What are the challenges patients face in Uganda related to surgical care?*
At ANDO, we provide treatments to improve our patients quality of life and conditions. With our amputee patients, we perform advanced operations to restore the stumps so that they are suitable for prothesis.
